Site Policy

  1. This site is operated by National Film Center, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (NFC).
  2. This site was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japanese animation, which is believed to have first been publicly shown in 1917.
  3. This site was developed with the National Institute of Informatics (NII) as part of the results of research on new methods of releasing collections, conducted as part of the "National Research Project for the Sustainability of Born-Digital Cinema (BDC Project)" under the 2016 "Cultural Arts Promotion Grant (Projects to Assist in the Promotion of Priority Areas in Art and History Museums)." It is hoped that this site will allow the collections of Japan's early animations preserved at NFC to reach a greater audience, be widely shared, to promote interest in and discovery of historical and cultural enjoyment, and to encourage contributions to creative work.
  4. This site conforms to the site policies of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo regarding copyrights, trademarks and disclaimers.

  5. All videos provided on this site are those that have been digitized from films preserved at NFC. There are some works among them with words or expressions that are no longer appropriate today as well as works that are incomplete. However, they have been released without being edited to uphold the significance of preserving historical and cultural film heritages.
  6. The "Noburo Ofuji Memorial Museum" is based on the NFC's exhibition "Noburo Ofuji: Pioneer of Japanese Animation" held in 2010. The materials accessible online are part of the "Noburo Ofuji Collection" preserved by NFC.
  7. The contents of this site (videos, images, text, etc.) may be used for private use within the limit of the Copyright Act. In addition, the materials may also be used for educational purposes by schools and educational organizations (excluding for-profit institutions) .

How to use "eReading"

In the "Noburo Ofuji Memorial Museum -Gallery" are works with a book icon over the image. Scripts and images of these works can be viewed on a computer browser with eReading.

How to use "eReading"
  1. [Triangular arrow button]: Turns pages.
    • Click the left button [◀] to move forward for vertical text.
    • Click the right button [▶] to move forward for horizontal text.
  2. [+] is the zoom in button and [-] is the zoom out button.
  3. Displays the entire page.
    • Pages can also be turned using the right and left arrow keys on the keyboard.
    • The pages can be laid out side by side by clicking the zoom out button several times.
